What you need before you start

WooCommerce with Printcart Store 2.13.2 or newer, connected to your Printcart account (version 2.13.2 or newer; tested on 6 October 2026).
A customizable product with Enable Design ticked. See Create a customizable product with the online designer.
Tokens in your Printcart wallet. Plans and top-ups are on the plans page.
A customer who is signed in. By default, visitors who are not signed in see "Please sign in to use AI tools." (see the last section).

Remove a background in the designer

Step 1Check that the tool is on

Go to Printcart Store > AI Tools. The AI Background Remover card (1) should say Enabled. It is on by default when your store is connected.

Expected result: the card reads "One-click transparent PNG cut-out for uploaded images in the designer" and "Each cut-out uses tokens from your balance."

Step 2Open the product designer

Open the product page and click Start Design (1).

Expected result: the designer opens in full screen.

Step 3Upload a photo

Open the Photos tab and click Upload (1). Choose a photo with a plain subject, such as a pet on a lawn.

Expected result: the photo appears on the canvas, selected.

Step 4Click Remove background (AI)

With the photo selected, find the image toolbar above the canvas. Click the Remove background (AI) icon (1), the first of the two AI icons. The second one is Upscale.

Step 5Choose the options and run

Leave Subject type on Auto-detect, or pick Person, Product, Logo, Text or Hair/fur. Set the edge softness, tick high-detail mode for hair or fur (it adds about 10 seconds), and choose a transparent or white output background. The window shows an estimate, here about 150 tokens. Click Remove background (2).

Expected result: the job starts. The final amount appears on the result.

Step 6Check the cut-out and apply it

The result appears in about a minute. The first job after a long quiet period can take about two minutes; the window says "Background removal is still processing" and keeps checking by itself, so leave it open. The green line shows what the job cost: in our run, 98 tokens. Look at the edges. You can erase or restore areas with the brush or Smart Select, and undo with Ctrl+Z. Click Apply background (3) when you are happy.

Step 7See it in the design

The cut-out replaces the photo on the canvas. Add text or other elements, then click Process to return to the product page and add the product to the cart.

Expected result: the design shows the subject without its background.

Who can use it, and who pays

Every cut-out uses tokens from your Printcart wallet, not the customer's. Customers see no prices or token messages unless they run out of something you control. Signed-in customers can use the tool. Visitors who are not signed in see "Please sign in to use AI tools." and nothing is charged. AI Tools also has a Guest access card, off by default, that lets signed-out visitors use background removal and upscaling; with it on, every job spends your tokens.

Troubleshooting

"Background removal is still processing." The window keeps checking for several minutes. If it cannot confirm the result it says tokens may have been charged, so check your wallet balance before you try again. In our cold-start test the result arrived after about two minutes and the balance dropped by the 98 tokens shown on the result.
"Please sign in to use AI tools." The visitor is not signed in and Guest access is off.
The icon is missing from the toolbar. Select the photo first, and check that your store is connected and the tool is enabled under AI Tools. The icons need a plugin build that includes them.
Part of the background is still there. Use the brush or Smart Select to erase it, or run the photo again with a different subject type.

Does the customer see token or billing messages?

Not in the normal flow. Costs are charged to your wallet. A message about not enough tokens appears only if your wallet is empty.
